MOHA Research Center, in collaboration with Metaichmio Publications and the bookstore Eklogi (Siamantas), presented the new book of the historian Thanos M. Veremis “1940-1941 The War of the Greeks”. The event took place on Wednesday, November 13, 2019, at 19:00 at the Imaret’s mosque. The book was presented by the author, the architect Dr. Sappho Angeloudi-Zarkada, and the historian Mr. Nikos Karagiannakidis.
In the book “1940-1941 the Greek War”, the political situation of Greece shortly before the outbreak of World War II and the peculiar profile of dictator John Metaxas are briefly analyzed. The author also explains how the Greek dictatorship chose to support the British democracy during this great war, while describing the conditions under which the Greeks united repelled the fascist attack, during a period of Axis dominance on European battlefields.
Thanos Veremis was born on August 26, 1943 in Athens. He studied political science at the University of Boston and history at the University of Oxford (Trinity College). In 1978, he was a Research Associate of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (London). During his career, he taught and studied at universities abroad, such as Harvard, Princeton, and St. Antony’s College, Oxford. Since 1987, he has been professor of political history at the Department of Political Science of the University of Athens. In 2004-2010, he was chairman of the National Council of Education. Today he is a municipal councilor in the Municipality of Athens.
